Thank you for this hopeful message Elizabeth...yes, indeed, ONWARD, take a deep breath, and as you say, we are all in this together.

A democracy of care. I love that! So hopeful but you are correct, it begins with self-care. Like on a plane. You put the mask on yourself first, then help the others. Beautiful!!

This essay is particularly relevant to me at this time since earlier this week I had a diagnostic test that showed I have significant plaque on the left side of my heart and I'm trying not to panic while I hear back from my primary physician on a treatment plan. But it has given me pause and escalating my goal for more rest and joy that I have been promising myself but constantly procrastinate on. I want to stay in the fight to save democracy, but what to find more strategic ways to fight and be less exhausted and worried.

Thank you as always for your superb writing. I needed this. I feel like we are in a never ending war now against fascism and we can't let our guard down for one minute or we fail. Which is ridiculous and unsustainable. Thank you for the reminder that we out number " them." And that rest is necessary for the long haul fight. And that we have built an enormous infrastructure on all levels of strong resistance. It is working and while their outrageousness still captures headlines, their impact is waning. Thank you. Again, I needed this.

Elizabeth and new Substack friends: I am sure we appreciate the need to rest but if I may, there is some work to do right now that simply cannot wait. I am sure you and this entire gang can do it and get some rest at the same time as 24 is approaching! What I mean is that in two months 3.3 Million high school seniors will graduate largely unregistered to vote. Nonpartisan voter registration of young folks should be at the very top of our list for Nov 24? Particularly when we are talking about 3.3 Million this May/June, 3.5 Million more in May/June 2024 and about 20 million college students. They can be the decisive voice in many critically important elections like AZ, OH, MT, PA,VA and more elections for Senate? We can’t let this 3Million go cause we are tired!

May I respectfully suggest that there is one spectacular group of Harvard students who are working very diligently on nonpartisan voter registration in innovative ways in 2,000 high schools--all in competitive CDs! You all can find out more and hopefully make a charitable deductible contribution to www.turnup.us/ ? This is so important and no one else is doing this work in so many locations and so passionately! Please believe me as my foundation www.Inspire2Vote.org has registered 102,000 high school students over the past 5 years but this turnup group at Harvard does it so much better and bigger that I’m joining them! And please take it from me that certainly not any candidates or party lifts there little finger to register any high school students when they must certainly should-- why not? They are too enthralled with tv ads that no high school senior ever watches!

So please visit www.turnup.us/ (just click on that address right here please) and help them try to save our democracy by Nov 24! It’s all on the line then folks so let’s get started now! Thank you for your time Elizabeth and hopefully new friends. Ira at IraLechner@yahoo.com
