So here we are.
The House of Representatives has no Speaker.
Donald Trump is on trial, has lost his business empire, and is facing ninety-one criminal charges in four different jurisdictions.
Matt Gaetz is persona non grata in the House and in his home state.
And last night, the House GOP was on the verge of throwing fists at one another after a vote to oust McCarthy.
These are interesting times, to say the least.
But I’m here today to tell you that all this chaos is actually a good thing. Why?
Because the GOP is done. It’s devolution is almost complete, and for reasons long predicted by none other than Lindsey Graham. It’s about damn time.
But over on our side of the fence? Well, our side is in array, aligned, diverse, more progressive by the minute, and, most significantly, getting shit done for the American people.
And we need more of that. We need to be the people who step into the chaotic void, and create something better and heretofore unseen in American life.
Here’s the thing: America has never lived up to its own mythology that it is truly a place where all people are created equal.
And until the scourge of white supremacy, patriarchy, late stage extractive capitalism are eradicated from our systems of power, this nation can’t actually live into its promise.
Yesterday, we swore in the first out Black lesbian woman senator in American history.
Today, President Biden forgave another $9 billion in student loan debt.
75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers are on strike, joining the UAW, SAG-Aftra, and a host of other unions who have turned Hot Labor Summer into Cool Labor Fall.
Hakeem Jeffries will be the first Black Speaker of the House, perhaps sooner rather than later, but most definitely in January 2025.
And last week, an incredibly diverse, smart and impassioned bench of Democratic legislators put to rest the idea that the performative distraction impeachment of a good man who loves his son was viable.
Everything we cynically thought might never change is finally changing for the better.
And while there is no question that there WILL be extinction bursts– spates of outrage or violence or attempts to maintain power by those who don’t want to see this change arrive– there is one thing that is not in doubt any longer.
CHANGE IS HERE.
Buck up, friends. Systems crumble so that we can build something better. A cracked foundation can’t hold a stable home. If we want a better nation, we need to let the old ways die.
Let what needs to be released be released. And let’s all keep working toward a truly free, safe and equitable future for all.
Awesome piece! Thank you for all of your contributions to this community of people you have built!
Beautifully written as always . You are such a light in the darkness as this all plays out . Thank you for writing and speaking to us on a daily basis. Education is the medicine that can heal the wounds caused by the sick remarks and inappropriate actions of the GOP.
